PHOENIX -- Corey Dickerson entered Sundays game with eight hits in his last 15 at-bats. But until the 10th inning, the Colorado Rockies outfielder was hitless. That changed quickly when Dickerson drove a two-out, 0-1 pitch into the pool deck beyond the right field fence for the tiebreaking home run in the Rockies 5-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. "I try to take the barrel straight to the ball. I dont try to do too much with it," Dickerson said. The Rockies avoided a seventh straight loss to Arizona and snapped a three-game skid overall with just their second win in 10 games. Dickersons 14th homer of the season came off Oliver Perez (2-2), who made a mistake with a hanging slider over the middle of the plate as he tried to use a quick-pitch. "Going through the at-bat I went up there looking for something out over the plate," Dickerson said. "He slide-stepped that second pitch and I just used my hands in reaction." Wilin Rosario, whose throwing error allowed the Diamondbacks to take a 3-2 lead in the fourth, hit a solo home run to tie the game in the sixth. Rosario singled in a run in the 10th to pad the Rockies lead. Ben Paulsen, called up Sunday to replace the injured Carlos Gonzalez on the roster, hit his first major league home run in the second, evening the score at 2. "The home run beat us," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "We had a lot of pressure on them, we had a lot of opportunities. We were 2 of 14 with guys in scoring position." Mark Trumbo doubled down the right field line in the first off Franklin Morales to drive in Ender Inciarte and Aaron Hill and give Arizona the lead. Diamondbacks starter Wade Miley struck out eight in six innings, allowing three runs on five hits with two walks. Morales was also fairly sharp, allowing two earned runs on five hits in six innings. Matt Belisle (3-6) got one out by working out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth for the win. LaTroy Hawkins picked up his 18th save by striking out the side in the 10th. "Were in a position where we cant play it safe. Take chances," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "Thats where were at." INCENDIARY INCIARTE Inciartes first-inning infield single gave him an 11-game hitting streak. Since July 12, Inciarte has hit safely in 18 of 19 games and reached base via a walk or hit in 20 of the last 21. BROTHERS GETS VOTE OF CONFIDENCE The Rockies Rex Brothers gets some credit for his teams win. In the ninth with the scored tied at 3, Brothers threw out the speedy Didi Gregorius at second base on a fielders choice, preventing runners from being on first and second with no outs. After loading the bases with a walk and single from Hill, Brothers induced a groundball to shortstop from the hot-hitting David Peralta for the second out, then gave way to Belisle. "It was kind of an instinctual play," Brothers said of throwing out Gregorius. TRAINERS ROOM Rockies: Gonzalez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with knee and ankle injuries. ... I suppose Sternberg has earned the right to speak out since his Rays, despite one of the lowest payrolls in the Majors at $58 million, are entering the final weekend of the regular season holding down the first Wild Card spot in the American League, one game ahead of Cleveland and two up on Texas.Following their end-of-season collapse, Dave Nonis told TSN Radio 1050 that hes looking to get the Leafs back to where they were two seasons ago when the team broke their seven-year playoff drought. The GM said the additions of Leo Komarov, Stephane Robidas and Roman Polak were made with the expectation that the veterans would set an on-ice example of the way the Leafs want their top players to compete. “Those players can generate a lot of emotion and they can bring players into the fight with them, and thats what we had two years ago and we need to get it back this year,” Nonis said. Despite the addition of two defencemen, Nonis said he wasnt overly concerned about his back-ends overall talent level, but felt like their fit as a group of six wasnt ideal. “We wanted to change the way we played the game. With Robidas and Roman, youre talking about guys who play very very hard and the compete-level of those guys is a big part of their game and we think itll rub off with the rest of our group.” Besides the players he did sign and acquire, Nonis also weighed in on the loss of centre Dave Bolland, and the Josh Gorges situation, in which the veteran blueliner accepted a deal to the Sabres after vetoing a trade that would have sent him to Toronto. “We did put a significant offer on the table for him,” Nonis said of the Bolland negotiations. “We felt it was reflective of his value to us, where he should be paid and there was another team that felt like he should be paid more.” On Gorges: “I may find that odd, but thatts his choice and hes earned that right.dddddddddddd” To round out his roster, Nonis mentioned he is still in the market for forward depth, pointing out the Leafs are looking to put an emphasis on increasing the reliance on their fourth line. “Your third and fourth lines have to contribute,” Nonis said, adding that he recognizes the leagues top teams use their fourth line for between eight and 12 minutes a game in order to lighten the load on top-end players and prevent them from wearing down. In addition to possible future free agent additions, Nonis speculated Josh Leivo, David Broll and possibly Sam Carrick could challenge for a roster spots up front next season, while on the back-end, Petter Granberg and Stuart Percy could work their way into the mix. Addressing the rumours surrounding back-up goaltender James Reimer, Nonis said he is fielding offers for the 26-year-old, but if a deal cant be reached expects him to be ready for the start of camp. “If theres a deal that makes sense for us to move James Reimer, and makes us better and gives us assets that are reflective of what he is, which is a goaltender who has been a no. 1, who could challenge for a no. 1 here, then youll look to do it,” Nonis said. “But its difficult finding quality goaltenders. We think he is one and I would expect if there isnt a deal that makes sense that he would come to camp in the best shape that he could possibly be in with the mindset to play in as many games as he can.” Nonis: Leafs looking to increase compete-level ' ' '
